Quality improvement 3: Small scale tests of Change – what does plan, do, study, act (PDSA) really mean?

Quality improvement is not only a crucial part of our professional role as a paediatrician but also required for consultant interviews and annual reviews of competence progression (ARCPs). In this final masterclass on quality improvement we turn our attention to the technique of small scale tests of change in order to deliver quality improvement. Whilst many have heard of PDSA, most will not have done it before, let alone master it.

In yet another highly interactive session open to trainees of all levels, and consultants, we work through the challenge of getting good at PDSA and enhancing your opportunity for learning and improving in a way that can be sustained in busy and pressured care environments. If you want to practice PDSAs amongst friends and colleagues, this is the place to do it, enjoy doing it and get to know what it takes to do well!

To get the most from this session please spend 10 minutes before you come to thinking about the last audit you did, what improvement you made as a result, and how you knew that you had made a difference. Make a note of your answers and bring it with you.
