Description
This workshop is designed to support clinicians who initiate and titrate insulin in practice and is developed in line with national guidance
The workshop includes why insulin initiation should be considered. The use of shared decision-making will be discussed in order to ensure that the individual is ready to start insulin psychologically as well as physiologically.
An overview of insulin initiation regimes will be a central component of the workshop, to include the pros and cons of each approach. Correct injection technique will be highlighted and attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a practical session, exploring different delivery devices. Titration of insulin in different scenarios will also be addressed.
Learning will be via a mix of informal lectures and interactive practical sessions delivered by an expert practising clinician.
Attendees will develop their knowledge of:
How the decision to start insulin is reached, recognising the impact of this decision
Different insulin types; their onset, peak and duration of action and appropriate use
Key issues relating to injection technique, including choosing appropriate delivery systems and the importance of correct injection technique
The relationship between diet, exercise and insulin requirements.
