“This practical one-day course focuses on the resuscitative thoracotomy and how to use this technique in trauma resuscitation.

You will practice surgical skills using animal tissue as well as learning approaches to decision-making and damage control.

This course is led by a mixed faculty of surgeons, many with experience of emergency medicine and and all highly experienced in performing resuscitative thoracotomy.

After attending this course, you should be able to:

Manage the arrested patient, working with the trauma team pre-thoracotomy and during resuscitative thoracotomy
Demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy specific to resuscitative thoracotomy including cardiac anatomy and the anatomy of the hilum and chest wall
Carry out treatment of injuries to the heart including opening the pericardium, control of bleeding and internal massage
Understand the management of the post-operative patient, including internal defibrillation, drainage and closing the chest
