Description

This is a joint meeting run between the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM) and the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM).

This meeting has been put together due to the demand from RSM and FOM members and others, who give advice on health and work. This also includes a discussion on the interface between legal issues and professional ethics in the changing context for our practice.

The meeting will look into the updated guidance published by the GMC in 2017 on confidentiality and consent, including that relevant to employment, the publication of the updated guidance by the FOM on ethics in occupational health practice, and the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May 2018, and the Data Protection Act 2018.

The morning will begin with Dr Steve Boorman, Chair of the FOM Ethics Committee, discussing common ethical issues relevant to health and work, as identified by the FOM Ethics Committee, and colleagues in health and work practice.

Professor Diana Kloss, a former Employment Tribunal Chair and expert in employment law and data protection, will further delegates understanding by setting out the legal basis for the use of data in occupational health practice.

Speakers will then turn to areas of specific legal and ethical challenges. The final speaker, Mr Mark Landon, an expert in employment law and in particular in the context of disabilities, and a member of the FOM Ethics Committee, will round off the academic input through discussion of legal, ethical and commercial considerations.

With experts across these fields speaking, there will be the opportunity to engage in discussion periods at the end of each of the morning and the afternoon sessions.
