- Limitations of Fitzpatrick classification at the darker end of the spectrum
- Difficulties with diagnosis (hard to see erythema, pallor, cyanosis or petechiae)
- Conditions more severe or disabling in dark skin
- (Melasma, Vitiligo, Albinism, Guttate Hypomelanosis, Keloid, Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation)
- Normal variants (Melanonychia, oral pigmentation, ‘Mongolian blue spot, Voigt line)

- Variants of AD
- Conditions peculiar to dark skin (an odd hotch-potch of unusual conditions)
- Lupus
- Scalp conditions (the chronic Folliculocentric Pustulosis of scalp group, Tinea)
- Caution with treatments (e.g. liquid nitrogen and severe permanent hypopigmentation)
